Best Bollywood Movies Of All Time

Bollywood churns out innumerable movies every year but few leave a mark.

Today, we share the the best Bollywood Movies of All Time, in no particular order

Mughal-e-Azam : One of the most expensive films of Hindi cinema, Mughal-e-Azam is considered as one of the milestone films in the history of Indian cinema. Directed by K Asif, the film starring Dilip Kumar, Prithvi Raj Kapoor and Madhubala in the lead roles portrayed an eternal love of Mughal prince Salim and courtesan Anarkali. Prithviraj Kapoor, who played the legendary role of King Akbar, immortalised the character on celluloid.

Sholay : Directed by Ramesh Sippy, Sholay is one of the most successful movies in the history of Indian cinema. With Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri and Amjad Khan in the lead roles, Sholay broke every box-office record and still is fresh and entertaining. The impact of this adventure movie was such that every single character of the movie is remembered till date. And for the first time in the history of Indian cinema, people loved an on-screen villain Gabbar Singh played by Amjad Khan.

Masoom : A cinematic jewel from Shekhar Kapur, Masoom, was based on a very sensitive subject and touched every heart. Stellar performances by Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, and Jugal Hansraj (as a child artist) added to the charm of the movie. The film is one of the most acclaimed ones from that time and is the winner of many awards for its actors as well as for its music.

Do Bigha Zameen : This 1953 movie was directed by Bimal Roy. This is a tragic drama about how a zamindar threatens to seize two acres of land owned by a humble family as they haven’t repaid their debts. The father of the family then works as a rickshaw puller in Kolkata to earn money. Do Bigha Zameen, exposes the vice-like grip that ruthless zamindars/moneylenders have on agriculture in this country. It is regarded as one of the earliest and finest film to bridge the art-commerce chasm. The movie had Balraj Sahni, Nirupa Roy, Murad, Jagdeep, Nana Palsikar in lead roles.

Pyaasa : Directed by Guru Dutt in 1957, Pyaasa is inspired by Saratchandra’s novel, Srikanta, Guru Dutt’s Pyaasa is the story of struggling poet Vijay who is trying to get his work published but faces constant rejection. He meets Gulabo a good-hearted prostitute who falls in love with him and his work and tries to help him. and he is suddenly hot property. As his earlier critics pay tribute to the ‘dead’ poet, he barges in and denounces this corrupt and materialistic world.  The cinematic mastery on display in Pyaasa has rarely been replicated in mainstream Hindi cinema.

Bhuvan Shome : This 1969 movie, directed by Mrinal Sen is set in the early years of Independence. Bhuvan Shome, a widower and a dedicated civil servant — strict, uncompromising – takes a holiday which transforms him irreparably though at the same time heightening his sense of isolation. The movie had Utpal Dutt and Suhasini Mulay in lead roles.

Garam Hawa : Set in Agra, the movie is directed by MS Sathyu. The story is about an elderly shoe manufacturer and his family who are faced with a crucial question: should they continue to live in India or migrate to the newly-formed state of Pakistan? The scenario looks bleak and there is little hope of a future in an environment of distrust and hate.

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron : Directed by Kundan Shah, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, with all its silliness, implausible plot and excessively theatrical acting, was an absurd take on the builder-administrative mafia, which is still relevant. Two bumbling jobless photographers are given an assignment by the hard-boiled editor of a newspaper whose sole goal is to catch the erring on the wrong foot. The Mahabharat scene towards the end of the movie is simply outstanding with great comical dialogues. This is arguably the funniest scene in HBJY

Gol Maal : Gol Maal is one of  Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s most famous and successful movies. Ramprasad (Amol Palekar), a graduate, works for a company owned by Bhavani Shankar (Utpal Dutt), a quirky man who equates a man’s moustache with his character. He also discourages his employees from pursuing any kind of hobby. When Ramprasad is caught by his boss at a football match, he has to invent a twin brother, the clean-shaven Laxman Prasad, to save his job. The movie is a hilarious roller-coster ride with Amol Palekar and Utpal Dutt.

Guide : Directed by Vijay Anand, this is a story based loosely on a RK Narayan novel and is about a tourist guide, Raju who rescues a wannabe dancer from a loveless marriage to an archaeologist and helps her achieve stardom. He makes money in the bargain but is convicted for forgery. When he returns from jail, he wanders about the countryside and is mistaken for a holy man. Due to drought he is forced to fast for 12 days so that it rains.

Madhumati : This 1958 movie was directed by Bimal Roy and is a classic reincarnation story written  by Ritwik Ghatak. The stars, Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala, play multiple roles alternating between the present and a past life. The story is about Devendra who takes shelter in a mansion when a landslide blocks his route to the railway station. He finds the mansion eerily familiar and soon learns about the story of his previous birth.

Anand : Another classic movie directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. The film was a story of a lively person suffering with a fatal disease, who passes every single moment cheerfully and brings smile on every face. Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan played their roles to such perfection that brought tears in almost every eye when the movie ended.

Mother India : Directed by Mehboob Khan, Mother India is one of the greatest films ever made in India. It rightly enjoys the status of a timeless epic. In its grand narrative, it captures aspects of Nehruvian India that are both positive and negative. Radha, a poor but righteous woman, struggles to raise her kids while going up against Sukhilala, a greedy moneylender. Despite the many hurdles she faces, she refuses to sacrifice her integrity.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge : Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge gave a superstar to the Indian cinema. Yes, that’s none other than Shah Rukh Khan. The film once again brought back the era of love stories and introduced Indian audiences to the scenic beauty of Europe and desi land. After smashing many records at the box office, the film became the longest running film in Indian theatres after Sholay.

Lagaan : Lagaan was based on the story of a village that united against the British rule to play cricket and achieve freedom from paying tax. One of the movies that re-introduced Indian cinema to the west, it was also voted in the top five films for the Oscars. Lagaan also established Aamir Khan amongst the most versatile actors of Bollywood.

Damini : Raj Kumar Santoshi’s Damini was the tale of a small time stage dancer’s struggle and fight for a poor rape victim. The issues of domestic violence, raping a minor, judicial system were very well reviewed and presented in the movie. Powerful performances by Sunny Deol and Meenakshi Sheshadri  along Amrish Puri as with evil scheming lawyer and brilliant screenplay by Santoshi packed a punch for this movie.

Kahaani : Vidya Baghchi, a pregnant software engineer, comes to Kolkata from London in search of her missing husband Arnab. Police officer Satyoki decides to help her in her mission. In Kahaani, Vidya Balan takes on her role with power and pride. The movie has that perfect shock value that a thriller rightly demands. The story totally grips you and leaves you at a dramatic high.

3 Idiots :  3 Idiots is coming of age and comedy-drama film co-written, edited, and directed by Rajkumar Hirani. It was loosely adapted from the novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat.  In college, Farhan and Raju form a great bond with Rancho due to his refreshing outlook. Years later, a bet gives them a chance to look for their long-lost friend whose existence seems rather elusive. The film is distinctive for featuring real inventions by little-known people in India’s backyards.

Munnabhai MBBS : Another comedy directed by Rajkumar Hirani. Munna is a goon who sets out to fulfil his father’s dream of becoming a doctor. With help from his sidekick Circuit, he enrols himself in medical college and drives Dr. Asthana up the wall.

Hrithik Roshan Movies List

As good-looking as a Greek God… Only one person in Bollywood can stake a claim to be that. And that’s Hrithik Roshan. He came, he saw, he conquered the hearts of millions. He not only has  charismatic look  and chiselled physique but also acting and dancing skills which are matchless.

He  is just a decade old in the film industry and he does few movies with each passing year, yet this actor has managed to play roles ranging from a super hero to a mentally-challenged child, a sexy thief to a paraplegic magician!

He is probably the only star in Bollywood apart from three Khans who has delivered blockbusters and is a part of Bollywood 100 Crore Club. If you look at Hrithik Roshan biography, you will see that he has delivered some of the biggest blockbusters of Bollywood like Krrish 3, Bang Bang and Kaho Na Pyaar Hai.

Have a look at Hrithik Roshan Movies List…

Bang Bang – 2014 : The Hrithik-Katrina starrer was one of the most anticipated movies of 2014. After stepping into Big B’s shoes, successfully, playing a desi version of Tom Cruise’s movie Knight and Day, was a cake walk for Hrithik. Bang Bang was not appreciated by the critics but Hrithik’s performance was faultless. His action sequences were highly appreciated and so was the was the chemistry between the lead couple. Despite mixed reviews it earned over Rs 140 crore at the Box-Office.

Krrish 3 – 2013 :  Krrish 3, the sequel to earlier Krrish did not impress the adult audience and is best suited for kids, though it became a blockbuster crossing the triple century mark. Hrithik Roshan plays the role of the superhero who is ubiquitous and invincible and he breezes through the multiple personas with the required zest and conviction.

Agneepath – 2012 : Stepping into Amiatbh Bachchan’s very Big shoes could best be described as an act of extreme bravery. Turns out, Hrithik convincingly glides into his coarse character here and has a towering presence. He completely redefines Vijay Dinanath Chauhan and never in his act do you see even a glimpse of the original.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara -2011 : In Zoya Akhtar’s coming of age story, Hrithik played the uptight Arjun whose transformation during a holiday around Spain helps him face his inner demons and learns to live life to the fullest… and boy! Hrithik Roshan rocked in this movie! `ZNMD` was one of the highest grossing Bollywood films of 2011 in India and at the international market.

Guzaarish – 2010 : Hrithik carried off a difficult role effortlessly, playing a paraplegic bent on euthanasia. He also sang a song in the film. Sadly, Guzaarish didn’t do well at the box-office, but his performance was highly appreciated.

Kites  – 2010 : Kites was expected to be that cross-over film that Bollywood has been dreaming about since long, but sadly it missed the bus. In the movie the much hyped chemistry between Hrithik and Barbara Mori was best labelled as thanda and as usual Hrithik looked good and acted okayishly in the movie..

Luck by Chance – 2009 : Luck by Chance is a perceptive portrait of our very own Bollywood. Hrithik plays a slightly enigmatic, edgy superstar in the movie and excels in his role.

Jodhaa Akbar – 2008 :This movie is One of the major breakthrough in his career. He played the role of Mughal emperor Akbar and played it effortlessly and convincingly.  Hrithik won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for Ashutosh Gowariker’s magnum opus.

Dhoom 2 – 2006 : Hrithik made being bad look deliciously good, playing hunky professional thief  and master of disguise. And the role got him the Filmfare Best Actor and rightly so. Hrithik nailed the role with élan with his daredevil stunts to his jaw-dropping and amazing dance moves and amazing chemistry with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Krrish – 2006 : The role that resurrected Hrithik’s career and gave Bollywood its first super hero. Hrithik won the heart of audience with his superlative  action, emotion, dance skills and acting ability.

Lakshya – 2004 : Lakshya took us through one man\’s journey into finding a purpose in life. From an urban drifter to a brave soldier, Hrithik played his part to the T. Unfortunately the movie tanked; but it gave us one of the most memorable dance performances ever – Main Aisa Kyon Hoon!

Koi… Mil Gaya – 2003 : Can an actor who looks like a Greek God play a character of a mentally challenged child? Yes, Hrithik can. Hrithik simply blew our minds and tugged our hearts with the role of Rohit Mehra. The role got him Filmfare Award for Best Actor as well as Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor.

Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon – 2003 : A rehash of Sooraj R Barjatya’s own home production, Chitchor, Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon was disappointing. Hrithik Roshan took his role as a vibrant personality a bit too seriously and ended up delivering a shockingly loud performance.

Mujhse Dosti Karoge! – 2002 : Another triangular love story, Mujhse Dosti Karoge  was aimed at the teenyboppers and  makes for mush entertainment. Hrithik Roshan steals the show from the two ladies, Rani Mukherji and Kareena Kapoor.

Na Tum Jaano Na Hum – 2002 : Na Tum Jaano Na Hum is one of those triangular love stories, where only one man can have the woman both he and his best friend love. It didnt do well on the box office despite good performances by Hrithik and Esha Deol.

Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage – 2002 : Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai was a film that catapulted Hrithik and Amisha Patel to stardom. It was a dream debut for the duo, so when they came together once again as the lead couple in Vikram Bhatt’s Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage, the expectations were high. But this movie failed miserably. Hrithik sinewy biceps and drop-dead looks didnt salvage his nonexistent characterisation or lack of credible dialogues in the movie.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham – 2001 : One would think with Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan in karan Johar’s debut tear jerking saga, there wouldn’t be much for Hrithik Roshan to do. But he proved everyone wrong and how!

Yaadein – 2001 : This movie was termed as champagne gone flat. It tantalised in the beginning but then lost its fizz soon after. Despite it being a flop, Yaadein is Hrithik’s film all the way. He acted beautifully, danced like a dream stole the thunder from under Jackie’s feet. Despite a poorly etched character, he carried off his part with conviction.

Mission Kashmir – 2000 : Hrithik Roshan played the role of a terrorist in this action-thriller. The movie turned out to be the third highest grossing movie of that year. He received positive reviews from the critics for his performance

Fiza – 2000 : According to critics, Hrithik’s performance as a young Muslim boy who disappears during the Bombay Blasts to reappear years later as a fledgling terrorist was a thing of wonder.

Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai – 2000 : The year 2000 marked the debut of a new age hearththrob in Bollywood.  The role(s) that made Hrithik popular, and THAT dance move of his became a rage. He won both the Best Debut and Best Actor awards at the Filmfare Awards – the only actor to have done so. Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai became the biggest Bollywood commercial success of 2000 and was the first Bollywood film to have won 102 awards.

Hrithik will next be seen in Ashutosh Gawarikor’s Mohenjo Daro. The duo have earlier worked together in Jodhaa Akbar released in 2008.

Gangsters may always fall, but it’s a thrilling, infamous ride. And Bollywood has encashed on this and some of the best film directors have produced some incredible gangster movies. There are a lot of movies which are inspired by real life gangsters and we have compiled them in this Bollywood Gangster Movies List

Don (1978) : Amitabh Bachchan is Don, a big time smuggler and ruthless criminal. However this Don meets his nemesis in the DSP D’Silva (Ifthekar) and is killed. Vaastav: The Reality (1999) : Director Mahesh Manjrekar Vaastav is allegedly based on the true-life story of underworld gangster Chota Rajan. This hard-hitting film delves into the realities of the underworld. Known to be one of Sanjay Dutt’s best performances, Vaastav was successful in its attempt to show that the underworld is not just about bloody fights, but consisted of human beings who are capable of emotions. The film, it was said, was partly financed by Rajan himself.

Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007) : In the film Shootout at Lokhandwala, Vivek Oberoi essayed the role of Maya Dolas, an underworld goon. The film is based on the Lokhandwala Complex shootout that took place in 1991.

In the process he befriends an underworld drug lord Rauf Lala and falls in love with a loquacious girl, Kaali Gawde.

Black Friday (2004) : Based on S Hussain Zaidi’s book of the same name, this is the most authentic film to date on Mumbai’s gangsters and the links of some mob bosses to Pakistan’s intelligence set-up. Director Anurag Kashyap’s docu-drama probed the 1993 blasts in Mumbai that killed 257 people and the riots that occurred after the bombings. It shows how Dawood Ibrahim and Tiger Memon planned and executed the serial blasts.

Apart from being commercially successful, the film won numerous accolades at film festivals and also went on to bag several awards.

Gangs of Wasseypur II (2012): This is the second installment of the Gangs of Wasseypur saga, and is all about the conflicts among three influential crime families. Politics, crime and revenge rule the roost in this segment, too. Violence, blood and gore are unleashed in full throttle in this epic crime drama.

Nayakan : Varadarajan Mudaliar was like a Robin Hood to people from South India living in Mumbai during the 1980s. Bollywood Iconic Characters

With so many movies released every year, some characters in our movies do not leave a mark on us, we see them on-screen today and forget all about them the next day. But there are some characters who are not only well remembered but have left a lasting legacy on the silver screen.

We bring to you the list of Bollywood Iconic Characters.

While some are obvious, and some may not be. Check them out, Bollywood’s most memorable characters…

Gabbar Singh from Sholay : This evil, sadistic dacoit with his unbuttoned shirt, shifty sleazy eyes, swagger and rustic dialogues, changed the face of villains in Bollywood. The iconic dialogue “Kitne Aadmi The!” has been one of the most unforgettable dialogues in the history of Bollywood.

Mogambo from Mr India : An insane megalomaniac who aspired to conquer India, Mogambo  with his dark black suit with golden embroidery was the technically advanced villains with missiles and bombs by his side. “Mogambo khush hua” is the cult dialogue from this cult villain.

Geet from Jab We Met: This bubbly, talkative, carefree character which made harem pants a stylish statement is still fresh in our minds. Her dialogues, “Main Apni Favorite Hoon” or “Ab to haath chhod do mera! Itni bhi sundar nahi hun main!” and many more is the reason why we still can’t get over her!

Rani from Queen : The transformation of a spurned and morose to-be-bride to a woman who rediscovers herself and rebuilds her life, and fights society to redemption is something we all can relate to.

Munna and Circuit from Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munnabhai : The honorable gangster with heart of gold and his loyal Man Friday, Munna and Circuit taught us many lessons unknowingly. The duo also added mumbaiya vocabulary in our life like “Too bhi naa mamu hi, yaar”, “Ay Laa.  Meri to vaat lag gayi”, ”Subah ho gayi, mamu“ and “Tension nahin lene ka”.

Sher Khan from  Zanjeer :  The baddie-turned-buddy who sported mehndi-coloured beard and hair and sang the popular number Yaari hai imaan, is another memorable character of Indian cinema. Pran who played this character wore authentic Pathani clothes and had an Afghani accent to match  with some classic dialogues like” Sher Khan khud aaya tha khud chala jayega.”

Chulbul Pandey from Dabangg and Dabangg 2 : Salman became everyone’s favourite law man as rough and tough super cop Chulbul Pandey. His bulging muscles, neat moustache, stylish aviators and witty one-liners like ” Haramzaade se yaad aaya Chaube ji … aapke aadarniye pitashri aaj kal kaise hai? or Hum tum mein itne ched karenge … ki confuse ho jaoge ki saans kahan se le … aur paadein kahan se” became a rage!

Langda Tyagi from Omkara : Saif Ali Khan made the character of cripple Langda Tyagi a despicable and abominable creep who utterly disgusts us. Even his look is in keeping with his character, his close shaven haircut, his grungy clothes, his paan stained teeth all made up his loathing character in the film.

Vijay Deenanath Chauhan from Agneepath : Of all the Amitabh Bachchan’s Angry Young Man roles, none was angrier – though not so young – than Agneepath’s fiery protagonist. He will forever be remembered for the famous dialogues, “Vijay Dinanath Chauhanpoora naam, baap ka naam Dinanath Chauhan, maa ka naam Suhasini Chauhan, gaon Mandwa, umar chhattis saal and “Aaj sham 6 baje maut ke saath apna apainment hai. Apainment .” HrithikRoshan aced this character too in the remake of the film but Big B was no doubt was amazing.

Baburao Ganpatrao Apte from Hera Pheri : Paresh Rawal left us in splits with his role as a drunkard in this flick. Harassed with his two tenants, he gave some of the best dialogues in this film. With perfect comic timing, he delivered dialogues like, “Utha le re baba, utha le… mereko nahin re, in dono ko utha le”.

Anthony Gonsalves from Amar Akbar Anthony : Amitabh Bachchan played the character with a frisky flourish and whisky swig, drunken monologue, coming out of an Easter egg and wooing the neighbourhood Catholic beauty Jenny with a flamboyance that made the character so distinctly unique.

Anand from Anand : Of the many beloved roles that Rajesh Khanna played, perhaps none is stamped into public memory  more deeply than the terminally-ill but always cheerful cancer patient who gave us  important life lessons with the dialogues like “Ae Babumoshai, zindagi aur maut uparwale ke haath hai. Usse na aap badal sakte hain na main” and songs like “ Zindagi kaisi hai paheli, haaai…”

Raj from Awaara : This charming and small time crook who gets into trouble but is not shy to admit it became Bollywood’s first global icon.

And there are some more Bollywood Iconic Characters…

Vijay from Don : Amitabh Bachchan’s character as Don has gained a cult status in the Indian cinema. In a double role, as the mafia boss Don he speaks in a clipped style and exudes ruthlessness while the street performer Vijay has an accent straight out of eastern UP. His famous dialogue from the film – Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahin, naamumkin hai – is well known to every movie enthusiast worth his salt.

Tara Singh  from Gadar : Who can forget the famous hand pump scene? And also the roaring at the cowering Pakistan police  and the cross-border patriotism all in Sunny Deol’s patented action and style.

Shahenshah from Shahenshah : Another Amitabh Bachchan classic character, the vigilante Shahenshah is a police inspector by day and disguised crime fighter by night. His dialogue, “Rishte mein to hum tumhare baap hote hain, naam hai Shahenshah”, is quoted so often!

Basanti from Sholay : This adorable, feisty, talkative tangewali  is one of the most unforgettable character of Bollywood. Her dialogues, ” Chal Dhanno! or Bhaag dhanno bhag, aaj teri basanti ki izzat ka sawal hai are still hot favorites!

https://youtu.be/wDAw3UqAQ64

Chandni from Chandni : She was pure romance and passion draped in flowing chiffon sarees. She danced like a dream and moved like a melody! No wonder Chandni still makes you go weak in the knees even after 2 decades of its release.

Amar and Prem from Andaz Apna Apna : “Amar aur Prem, yaane ke Amar Prem. Naam sunte hi main samajh gaya tha ke tum dono awwal darje ke filmi aur awaare ladke ho” Well said and they also had insane affinity for blunders and silliness.  Aamir’s delicious wickedness and I-am-oh-so-sly act as Amar complemented Salman’s brawn-and-dumb-dodo turn perfectly.

Bhuvan from Lagaan : Yeah, we loved all those runs he scored, but this salute to Bhuvan is for being a hero, a true leader and sticking to his convictions right till the end. And oh, how can we forget the desi accent he pulled off so effortlessly! “Aage aike ghumavat hai…ab aa, aa, aa..”

Bhiku Mhatre from Satya : “Mumbai Ka King Kaun?”, well of course, Bhiku Mhatre! Manoj Bajpaye played the hot-headed, erratic, emotional and child-like Mob boss to perfection.

Crime Master Gogo from Andaz Apna Apna : Shakti Kapoor reached cult status in the world of comedy as Crime Master Gogo in the comedy flick. His dialogues “Suno suno duniya ke logon, sabse bada hai mister Gogo  and Crime Master Gogo naam hai mera, aankhen nikal ke gotiyan khelta hun main” are memorable still.

Rancho from 3 Idiots :  Wasn’t it utterly astonishing to see a 40+ actor play the role of a college student, and that too with such conviction! Aamir Khan was brilliant as Ranchhoddas Shamaldas Chanchad aka Rancho aka Phunsukh Wangdu – the brilliant student who fights against the stereotype in the educational system.  His “Aal izz well!”  mantra is something that we all can use in our daily life!

Raj and Simran from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge : This iconic couple taught a whole generation to fall in love but also fight for it. Deep within, all of us wish that we were Raj or Simran and dream of meeting our counterpart, in the same trademark DDLJ manner. Aah!

There are some more Bollywood Iconic characters like…

  • Aman Verma from Kal Ho Na Ho
  • Amiran from Umrao Jaan

What’s a Bollywood movie with romance. Over the years there have been many Bollywood actors who have come together as a couple and made you feel the love and romance right off the movie screen.

These actors sizzle together on screen so much so that they appear in multiple films together. Here are our favourite co-stars who have come together as  couples and scorched the silver screen.

Presenting the greatest Bollywood Jodis ever…

SHAH RUKH KHAN – KAJOL

They are best movie couple hands down! Whether they come together as lovers, friends or a married couple, Kajol and Shar Rukh Khan share some amazing chemistry.
